Beartooth - "Loser" Single Review

We're quickly approaching the release date of many new albums. One of the most anticipated has to be Beartooth's sophomore record, "Aggressive". It's shaping up to be one of the heaviest releases this summer. So if you're looking for something to head band or mosh to, this would be your ideal album.

Everything from the album's title, to the cover artwork, to the lead single is "aggressive". Amidst the many heavy acts shifting toward a more mainstream sound (ie Of Mice and Men, Memphis May Fire, and of course Bring Me the Horizon), it's nice to see there are still bands that can still write some kick ass songs.

Staying in the same vein as previous singles, but offering so much more. That's "Loser" in a nutshell. The song deviates just enough that this isn't a "great more screaming and chugs" scenario. Bouncy verses and the almost poppy guitar riff give the song that radio friendly edge the other two songs didn't. Still, it certainly won't be be breaking into mainstream radio anytime soon.

The one negative glaring us in the face is the lack of concept (so to speak). The song follows many anthemic hard rock tracks. Think Fall Out Boy's "The Phoenix" or even My Chemical Romance's "Na Na Na". Sure of the three Beartooth's is without a doubt the heaviest, but it's a standard uplifting callout to all the "losers". The palm mute riff, 4/4 drum beats, and the lyrics weigh the song down some. But as always, that doesn't mean the song is bad, or any less fun to listen to.

Summary -
This song is vastly superior to "Always Dead", and maybe even the album's title track. Caleb Shomo has proved he's a master at crafting catchy, energized choruses. This song doesn't disappoint on that front. Flawless blending of metal, punk and even some pop punk, "Loser" isn't a loser. It has its flaws, but all in all you have to love this track.

Rating - 8.5/10
